GRL – Ugly Heart
GRL was formed by the team that brought you Pussy Cat Dolls.
Released in 2014 as part of their self-titled EP, “Ugly Heart” became one of GRL’s most notable hits. Comprised of members Emmalyn Estrada, Natasha Slayton, Lauren Bennett, and Paula van Oppen, GRL brought a fresh perspective to the pop music scene. With its infectious chorus, danceable rhythm and amazing video, the song quickly gained popularity.
The band did struggle to find similar popularity like Pussy Cat Dolls. Tragically, the journey of GRL was further marred by the loss of one of its members, Simone Battle, who passed away in 2014. Battle’s death sent shockwaves through the music community and left her bandmates and fans devastated. Her untimely passing underscored the immense pressure and emotional toll that can accompany a career in the spotlight.
In the wake of Battle’s passing and amidst the challenges they faced, GRL ultimately disbanded in 2015. The decision to part ways was undoubtedly a difficult one, but it allowed the members to pursue their individual passions and find solace in their personal lives.
The song remains one of my favourite girl band tracks.
