She’s Done It!

Michelle Yeoh just created history by being the first Malaysian to win an Oscar for Best Actress. I was beaming with pride for being a fellow Malaysian. I share the joy as growing up we always thought that the centre stage was always reserved for the few.

Grewing up, I didn’t know that Michelle Yeoh was Malaysian until she starred in James Bond beside Pierce Brosnan in Tomorrow Never Dies. I recall her speaking in Bahasa in one of her movies with Jackie Chan but thought it was line she learned for the film.

She went on to star in many other Hollywood Blockbusters such as Crouching Tiger Hidden Dragon, Memoirs of a Geisha and Crazy Rich Asians. She finally landed an Oscar for her role in Everything Everywhere All At Once which in itself is a crazy movie with a serious message.

She has a busy schedule ahead of her with a new series coming out on Disney+ called American Born Chinese and two further Avatar movies. I am sure the phone will be buzzing for many more roles.
