Oktoberfest

Look Ma! I made it to Munich for Oktoberfest. I am very fortunate to be able to join this years edition. I knew about the celebrations and have finally made it to the home of the original festivities.

The Calmness before the Madness

The History of the Festivities

Kronprinz Ludwig (1786–1868), later King Ludwig I (reign: 1825–1848), married Princess Therese of Saxe-Hildburghausen on 12 October 1810. The citizens of Munich were invited to attend the festivities held on the fields in front of the city gates to celebrate the royal event. The fields were named “Theresienwiese” (“Theresa’s Meadow”) in honour of the Crown Princess, and have kept that name ever since, although the locals have abbreviated the name simply to Wiesn

I did not miss the chance to dress up in Lederhosen for the day. We started with a lunch with collegues but stayed on till 1000 pm. Almost 8 hours of enjoying the festivities. The crowd did get livelier as the evening progresses. I guess it must be something to do with the alcohol 😉

Starters of Meat Platter

I can’t recall what I had for lunch precisely but it was a meat dish and Apple Strudel for pudding. We had to move tables when our lunch reservations were over. It wasn’t long before we were on benches and toasting each other. It was certainly an incredible atmosphere.

It started raining in the evening but we manage to explore the fair ground a bit before heading to the metro to make our way back to our hotels.
