Whigfield – Saturday Night
I spent most of the working week in Copenhagen and was searching for a Danish singer and was surprised that Whigfield is Danish. So, this would be a fitting song and the weekend is near.
“Saturday Night” by Whigfield was a groundbreaking Eurodance pop hit that took the music world by storm in 1994. Released by Danish singer Sannie Charlotte Carlson, the song made history by becoming the first debut single to enter directly at Number 1 on the UK Singles Chart, dethroning Wet Wet Wet’s 15-week reign. The track, which originated from a demo created in 1991, features a catchy, simple melody with its iconic “dee dee na na na” intro – which was actually a recording mistake that the producer loved and kept. Despite its seemingly basic composition, the song became a massive international success, topping charts in multiple countries and selling over 1.18 million copies in the UK. The song’s music video, featuring Carlson getting ready for a night out, perfectly captured the song’s carefree, dance-ready spirit, making it an instant classic that defined mid-90s pop culture.
