Imagini.net Visual Profile

Another cool website I discovered. Well, a bit later than about a million others but what the heck!

Try this thing out from Imagini.net. It asks you a series of questions with the answer options given in pictures. This will in return used to formulate your personality test results that you can have in a page to share with your friends. Click here to see mine as a demo.

Here is a screen shot of my profile page which I will be customizing shortly.

Imagini.net

Below is a widget which you may generate after you have created your account. You can use this to blog and add it on your social network sites like Myspace or Friendster.

Read my VisualDNAâ„¢ Get your own VisualDNAâ„¢

There is also another widget, which is generated from another series of questions similar to the above but is about wishes.

In a nutshell, I believe this site has huge potential and is a cool tool. They better come up with more fun stuff to do on their site moving forward or their popularity might die off. It will no longer have its stickiness factor. We will see about that.

Cheers!

Save Your Website Bandwidth

If you are running a blog on your own servers, why not save a little bit of your bandwidth by off loading them to third party image hosting websites.

Bennyong.com uses Flickr.com for all personal pictures and ImageShack.us for any other images. (eg. Website Logos & Screenshoots). The reason behind this is to reap the benefits of using a web based image organizing tool that can centralize all your collection for easy viewing and house keeping.

For example, the gallery in this blog syndicates the contents from Flickr.com which is powered by Yahoo!. This means that I can benefit from using a common platform to centralize all my personal pictures for sharing and I can access it anywhere for free. (Unless I upgrade for a premium package which by the looks of it, ain’t gonna happen anytime soon)

And since I did not want to disrupt my personal photos with any other pictures, I decided to use ImageShack.us for any other images that I need to post. If I were to host the images myself, I will need a FTP application or use my online file manager from my web hosting company to do this each time.

The Cons

Since the website is managed by a third party company, you never know when they may go bust and instantly all the images on your sites will no longer exists and appear invalid. Also, all free image hosting sites that I know require you to link back to them in exchange of using their free hosting service.

If you are ready to explore this path, there are load of other image hosting websites out there such the following to name a few:

TinyPic Image and Video Hosting
PhotoBucket.com

Thinking out loud, if you were to have a blog on Blogger.com, everything will be sorted out for you to make your post. However, I am not sure whether they provide centralize access to the collection of images that you have posted all together.

Well, let me know what you think?

Cheers!

Self Publishing with Lulu.com

Ever dreamt about publishing your own book but never knew how? Well, dream no further with Lulu.com which is Web 2.0 answer to self publishing.

Lulu.com Logo

Similar to some other sites that allow you to personalize your items for sale, Lulu.com allows you to create books for sale in both downloadable versions and physical prints. They do not print the copies directly but stores them digitally and set them to the printers whenever there is an order. This is very smart as there is Zero Inventory.

Lulu.com offers three types of membership which is FREE (Free is good, that’s the account I am on), Publish by You (Limited to certain countries) & Publish by Lulu (The only paid option for most of us, $99.00). There are pros and cons to each I guess but will not comment as I am not that in the publishing industry.

To create your book, there is a wizard like tool that guides you through steps in putting your book together. You may specify the cover type, designs and almost everything to customize your creation. There is also a calculator that shows how much the associated publishing costs would be. Here you can state the ideal amount you would like to earn and they will sum it all up as the price of your creation.

Each author will get their store like mine at http://stores.lulu.com/bennyong. It will list all the books available and you can conveniently link to it to sell your creation.

They pay commissions through Paypal ($5.00 Minimum Payout) or Check ($20.00).

Besides being a site to self publish your work, you may socialize with other budding authors and also browse the market place for exclusive book titles.

In a nutshell, Lulu.com is a good website that I would recommend to all budding authors. It costs you almost nothing (I added time as a factor already) to use this platform to showcase your work. You don’t even need to handle any back end admin to get your payment and printing to be done and yet get your book promoted to billions on the internet. A no brainer I would say.

If you are serious about publishing, Lulu.com offers a whole other range of services to kick start your career.

The reason that inspire me to write this blog post is because I made a mere $4.99 profit from a book that I created to test the functions and features of Lulu.com. I can now officially call myself an author as my book was purchased from Lulu.com. You never know, I might be signing copies in a book store near you someday.

Cheers,

Face Recognition With Myheritage.com

Deep down inside I always knew I look like a celebrity. (Yet another shameless self acclaimed) Well, Myheritage.com will be a testimony to the statement this time around.

Myheritage.com

I discovered Myheritage.com from stalking a peers blog like where I usually find interesting websites to immortalize my presence on the internet. =P

The Israel based company was started by a team who was passionate about Genealogy. The website has a full service ranging from free web generators to family tree products.

Although it requires registration to use the site, it pays off as there are a few cool face recognition tools to mess around in Myheritage.com which includes a comparison of a celebrity look a like and Morph which slowly transform your face to the celebrity that you apparently look most a alike to.

Here are some collage that I generated from the above mentioned tools.

Celebrity Look A Like

It is a bit of a concern that I look more like a chick. I was expecting Brad Pitt, Keanu Reeves and David Beckham to show up but it turned out otherwise. I do not whether this is indicating that I have more feminine look which usually is the characteristics of the now popular Metrosexuals.

MORPH

I should have used a picture with me wearing a baseball cap to make the morphing effect more convincing. Unfortunately, I couldn’t find one.

In a nutshell, this is another cool website and if you have nothing to do on a lazy weekend, head on to the site and have fun. Do let me know you turn out to be like.

Cheers!

The website is very straight forward to use with a step by step wizard like guide. I created the games below in less than 5 minutes and 3 simple steps. There were tons of games to choose from but I produced the ones below as examples.

Dancing Game

Sniper Game

Once you have created your game, you are given three options:

1) Direct Link to a page on their website where your game is hosted

2) An Embedded Code for your Profile Pages or like the above blog posts. – This is uber cool as you can specify the size you want it to fit your desired content pages

3) A Thumbnail description with link to your game as following:

In a nutshell, this site is another amazing free personalized content creation tool. This are good blog fillers on the days when you have writer’s block.

Be creative and use celebrity pictures instead. Browse through the top created games to be inspired.

Well, enjoy the games above and head on down to Pictogame.com to start creating your own personalized games. =)

This is a very handy tool with a great accuracy and success rate after my personal testing. It allows users to search for the meaning of the characters that they scribble on screen. The drawing area now looks just like those notebooks for learning Chinese characters we are all used to. Also, putting your mouse over the character suggestions you selected triggers a pop up menu for simple identification.

JibJab.com

Another cool website I stumbled upon while doing my regular web browsing. This website is called JibJab.com and boasts a whole load of flash animation content. They can be used as personalized e-greeting cards and for blog posts like this one. The cool feature they have are that selected sendables allows you to star in your own flash video movie. Gizmoz.com has this but it took me ages to load.

The site requires registration and you are given $5 worth of free credit to spend on paid flash contents. Also they offer premium content, there are selected stuff which are free just like the following. (I like this a lot as I am in the video with Paris Hilton, Justin Timberlake, Tom Cruise and Lindsay Lohan)

Don’t send a lame Holiday eCard. Try JibJab Sendables!

Have fun and send me the links to your JibJab creations as I would like to see what you have come up with.

Cheers!

Spare 5 Minutes And Learn

5Min.com

Another cool website that I stumbled upon from watching a video on Youtube. It is called 5min.com. The aim of the website is basically knowledge sharing between people around the world through the beauty of video sharing. There are tons of tutorials awaiting you and if you have any spare time, contribute some as well. Every video only averages 5 minutes on this website which should not take too much of your time.

If you are ever bored, just drop by this website and learn something new!

Cheers,

Benny Ong

Joost.com : 15,000+ TV shows, 250+ Channels

Greetings All,

In my casual browsing over the weekend, I discovered Joost. Joost is a system for distributing TV shows and other forms of video over the Web using peer-to-peer TV technology, created by Niklas Zennström and Janus Friis (founders of Skype and Kazaa). Apparently the Tycoon Li Ka Shing has a stake in the company as well.

Joostâ„¢ the best of tv and the internet

I installed the application and have been watching some short comedies so far. The streaming quality is quite good despite my streamyx connection with the speedtest.net results as below:

Speed Test Results

The application is ad supported and have a very Web 2.0 feel to it. Navigation takes a while to get used to but once you get a hang on it, everything is simple. I can imagine this application running on all TVs one day.

In the world of Web 2.0, I believe this website is one of the best and as always free is good.

Well, if you do not intend to install anything on your machine, there are tons of video and movie sites out there such as CoolStreaming.us below.

That’s all for now!

Create Your Own Flaming Text

Well, I just got home earlier today after a quick trip back to my sweet hometown, Penang. Driving along the highway, I recall the earlier days when I started getting my hands deep down and dirty in web designing. I was mesmerizing the days when a new html code or dhtml scripts that I just learned would keep me happy for hours. There was also website that I was obsessed with when I first found out about it. It is called flamingtext.com which allows you to generate flaming effects with any text that you specify.

 bennyong.com

Besides the resident flaming effect, there are a whole lot of other fonts available and cool features that you may add to them such as a stained glass effect.

 Stained Glass

There are glowing and shadow effects. I know that you can get this done easily in Photoshop or Fireworks but it is a cool web based generator application powered by CGI. On the plus side, you may access this website from any PC and a logo or fancy text generated for your use anywhere without having to install an application. Although the website has not changed much since I visited it ages ago (I swear it is about more than 5 years since), the good thing is that they are still providing it for free!

Well, that’s all for now and I will retire to bed early today in preparation of braving through my inbox after not being at work for the past two days.

C’ ya! ÂÂ
